Governor Dick Update Print E-mail

Hi everyone,

What a great summer it has been thus far.  I hope you have all enjoyed some great trail riding or hiking.  I just wanted to send out a few updates concerning the trails at Governor Dick and Swatara.  Also, we really need your help at Swatara to finish up a trail.

First, the new trail at Governor Dick is awesome if I must say so myself.  Officially it is #15 and Matt and I are calling it "Dark Side" due to the lack of light on the south side of the mountain by early evening.  The official buzz about the trail is very positive from the general community and all trail users.  Unfortunately, there have been some moments which have caused many of us some frustration, such as horses on the trail, a motorcycle which dripped oil on rocks, and recently a few downed logs which were removed from the trail by someone who used a chain saw.  Also, many of you have noticed some trail work done on trail #5.  That was felt to be necessary by the members of the board and fire company for access.  Enough said on that topic.  Last, currently on staff at the environmental center is a retired gentleman working part-time who will hopefully be helping out with trail corridor clearing and also general maintenance about the park.  Please stop by the center some time and take notice at how nice it looks.

Second, I hope you have all had the opportunity to head out to Swatara State Park and ride the stacked trail system built by SAMBA.  The trails there are a fine example of free flowing sustainable single track with challenges for all rider levels.  Also great for hiking, trail running, and cross country skiing....if it snows!!  Currently, President Brian Arnold and members are working on a new trail.  It is my hopes to rally all of us who love to recreate on these trails to head over there the next few trail work dates and get this trail finished up so our efforts can be directed towards more trail use and potentially more trail design for the future.

Future dates to work on the new trail at Swatara Park: Sat. 8/23, Sat 9/6, Sun 9/21, Sun 10/5, Sun 10/19 at 9am.  Additional dates to be determined as needed.  www.sambabiker.com for directions and additional information.

Hope to see you out there.  Remember, please RSVP to Brian Arnold (click here to contact Brian) so that he can plan accordingly to have tools available for those who attend the trail work sessions.

Thank you much,

Desiree
