Some of you may have seen trees marked in blue along trails 13 & 15; this if for a timber management activity that the park is going to do once the ground is frozen.  What is SAMBA’s position on this? I believe SAMBA's best recourse is to focus on the trails and how to protect them. If logging is to occur in a bad section of trail we could use that opportunity to reroute and improve the trail. There is a section in the forestry plan that specifies a buffer around the trails. However there is always a possibility that a drag road would need to cross the trail. SAMBA will attempt to address trail crossings by requesting that the crossing/s be identified to make sure the impact is minimal and are not at key sections of a trail. Honestly I think it would be better to focus on lessening any negative impacts that logging could have on the trail rather than fighting the logging as a whole. Let me know what you think.

Attached below is the Gov. Dick Newsletter that contains and article on the planed timber management.

Trail Work Day Sun Nov 18 PDF Print E-mail

I know I mentioned an upcoming trail work day in my last post, and it looks like there is some interest in trying to put a last minute one together for this Sunday Nov 18.
The main focus is to install the new bridge treads on the large bridge on Rattling Creek Trail. The treads are already pre cut, we will need help getting the new treads down to the bridge, tearing the old treads off, installing the new ones, and getting the old ones back up to the road. It also sounds like most of the downed trees are on Doc Smith, so we would like to get that trail cleared up. It won't take too many people to get this all done in a short period of time, the goal would be to meet around 8AM and be done by Noon. A few people for the deck project, and maybe 2 small crews for log cutting. Bring your bike to ride afterwards.
If we get lots of people coming to help, there are also a few spots that could really use some brush cutting, we could send a group with at least 1 brush cutter and maybe 2.
If you would like to help, please let us know in the comment section below.

Here is a quick Sandy update and anouncement:

hurricane Sandy

From the report I got Swatara was the only park hit hard by hurricane Sandy.  We set out with a small chainsaw crew last weekend to investigate the damage and were surprised to find so much down.  There were about 100 trees down which took an accumulated total of 41 hours to clean up. Once we got into it we just pushed through it. However, if we would have known what we were walking into we would have called out for more help.  So,  I would like to thank Joe Ketrick, Nick Resanovich, Terry Resanovich, Jeff Strubhar,  & Andrea Strubhar for their assistance in clearing the trails. There were also people, that I did not get their names, that helped out by reporting damage, aided with handsaw, and helped move trees. Thanks again to everyone!

First evening of the night rides is Tuesday November 13, 2012. This is the only day that night riding is legal in the park so if you want to ride please be there and ready to ride at 6:30 pm.  This is a group ride and no one is permitted to ride alone. So, remember you bikes, lights, helmet and smiles because they are all required. All riders should be out of the park by 9pm.

See you on the trails!
