Hello all, Very good news to report with regard to trail 4 at Governor Dick. In a collaborative effort with the board members at GD, it has been decided that trail 4 should remain open to mountain biking. It can be accessed from trail 2 to the tower and then down trail 1 to trail 4. The small section of trail 1 towards the center is still foot travel only. This will once again allow mountain bikers the opportunity to ride an excellent sustainable downhill mountain bike trail built by locals many years ago. Soon we will fix the trail post designations to indicate bikes are permitted. Additional projects will include a re-route of trail 6 once the fencing at GD is completed. The fencing is occurring in the areas where the dead oak trees were harvested due to the gypsy moth invasion. They will be re-planting inside the fencing which is part of the "Growing Greener" grant. Also, we will be doing a clean up around the old Clarence Schock Tower House site with a commemorative plaque to be placed nearby. In the past folks have asked about group rides so we are hopeful to set that up. Last, there is always trail maintenance to do. June 12th we will be doing an official night mountain bike ride. There will be a $5 charge per rider and proceeds will go to the Trail Support Committee to buy tools. I will post the ride in May with detailed information on the SAMBA website and MTBR. In the near future we will be asking for help to complete our projects. We are hopeful more trail users will join us on the support committee and attend meetings every third Thursday of the month at 7:15PM. For now, enjoy the snow....it will melt....and it will be time to ride again!! Desiree & Matt McElheny Trail Support Committee at Governor Dick |

UPDATE: The new trail rules went into effect 1-1-10! Please check out the new map here (click here). The proposals we had submitted to the Board at the park have been rejected. We are still trying to gain back trail 4. Affected trails: Trail 1 – Gravel Road to tower Trail 2 – From Pinch Parking Area to Trail 1 Trail 4 – From Trail 1 to Trail 15 Trail 12 – Old Horseshoe Trail (downhill from Trail 9 (road) to Trail 5, 13 Trail 13 – From old 72 to Trail 5 (bikes, horses must use old 72) Trail 14 Please note: Even though the sign reads “THE 2007 GOVERNOR DICK TRAIL SUPPORT COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION…”, that the committee that was involved was forced into agreeing to the closures only on threat of losing all trail access to biking. The signs read as follows: THIS TRAIL IS FOOT TRAVEL ONLY THE 2007 GOVERNOR DICK TRAIL SUPPORT COMMITTEE RECOMMENDATION AND SUBSEQUENTLY APPROVED BY BOTH PARK TRUSTEES: THE LEBANON COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AND THE CLARENCE SCHOCK FOUNDATION HAS DESIGNATED THIS TRAIL AS FOOT TRAVEL ONLY. EFFECTIVE JANUARY 1, 2010 PROTECTED BY LEBANON COUNTY ORDINANCE # 32 AND 18 PA CS §3503 THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION Desiree & Matt McElheny Trail Support Committee at Governor Dick
F oot travel only trails to be posted in November '09:
Hello all, the Board of Trustees at Governor Dick will be enforcing the decision made over two years ago to post certain trails at Governor Dick in Mount Gretna, PA. as "Foot Travel Only". Currently, the trails involved are: 1,12, section of 13, 14, and possibly 4. As it stands, this will involve 3.15 miles(21%) of trails.
It is absolutely imperative that these postings be honored. There is a real chance all trails could become Foot Travel Only if not. Currently, the Trail Support Committee has several trail proposals being considered which will be very beneficial to the trail system at GD if we get approval.
We will keep folks up to date as to when the posting does occur. As advocates of a multi-use trail system we do not agree with this decision but we do have to honor it. In the near future we will have a map available. I can also guarantee you that the defacto park ranger will be looking for folks to ticket and also has the right to take your bike. Please don't get yourself in this situation.
Do trust that the Governor Dick Trail Support Committee is doing everything we can to make our park a great place to ride. As always, the Susquehanna Area Mountain Bike Association will continue to maintain the multi-use trails at Governor Dick.
Last, we would appreciate if this message gets passed along to anyone who rides GD.
Thank you,
Desiree & Matt McElheny Trail Support Committee at Governor Dick |

Logging begins today, February 6, at Governor Dick and will last 6 to 8 weeks. The area affected is from the monument rock parking lot to the environmental center. |

At 10 a.m. Brad D, Andrea S, and I met at the Cornwall rail trail parking lot for a quick warm-up in the 27-degree air. We soon met up with Bill Gentile and few others. After a quick spin up through the Gretna Village we hit the trails. The trail highlights where trail #4 (downhill!) to the challenging trail #15 (my favorite new trail) then on to trail 13 (an old favorite). Finally onto 5 and then back on the rail trail back to the vehicle. It wasn’t an epic, but it was fun! There will be many more rides in 09 so stay tuned! HAPPY NEW YEAR! |
