Completion of April 5th Boyscout Conservation Project Print E-mail
Hello to all,

It is with the greatest amount of respect and gratitude that I thank you all for a well done job of trail work.  Special thanks to: all the boy scouts and their leaders;  Neal Galbraith, Andrew Latanishan and Jim Rank for chosing our location to fulfill 7 hours of their required conservation work; Sean Durgin and Pete Wallace from YAMBA (York Area Mountain Bikers Association); Brad Ditzler who chairs the Governor Dick Support Committee; Brian Arnold, Andrea Strubhar, Brad Doxtater, Matt Myers, Matt McElheny from SAMBA (Susquehanna Area Mountain Bike Association) and volunteers of the Park at Governor Dick; members of the board who govern The Park at Governor Dick (Chuck Allwein, Ray Bender, Dave Eichler, Frank Eichler, Tom Harlan, John Weidman) and Janie Gockley (office manager at Governor Dick Center).

Over the past several months, much collaboration and planning occurred to make the April 5th Scout Conservation Project happen.  With much sincerity I can express.....the PA Dutch Council of the Boy Scouts of America is a grade one quality organization.  I wish them the best of luck with their future endeavors, especially in obtaining the Philmont Arrowhead award, and invite them back for future trail work sessions.  I tried to get them to let me go along to Philmont, but....something about me not being a boy??  Besides, I would probably eat too much!!  I guess being a girl scout many years ago doesn't apply.

A brief description of what was accomplished:
  • Completion of all 3 spanning ladder bridges
  • Near completion of the long bog bridge section
  • Rock armoring in several small areas with several more to do
  • Bench cutting in a few areas
  • General raking of entire trail except in the big rock garden sections
  • Placement of several rolling grade dips and knicks

Despite the day being very productive, there still remains much work to do, especially in the big rock sections.  Overall, the objectives of the day were met making this project a big success.

Last, many, many thanks to all the SAMBA/YAMBA/Governor Dick volunteers who participated and were key to making the day go smoothly.  Because such volunteer groups exist, we can through example and education prove to the community that sustainable trails can be built in natural settings without harming ecosystems.

Thank you to all,

Desiree J. Oliveri-McElheny

P.S.  Thanks 'Tasty Cake' man for your generous donation of sweet treats!
