Governor Dick News
GD Timbering Print E-mail

Some of you may have seen trees marked in blue along trails 13 & 15; this if for a timber management activity that the park is going to do once the ground is frozen.  What is SAMBA’s position on this? I believe SAMBA's best recourse is to focus on the trails and how to protect them. If logging is to occur in a bad section of trail we could use that opportunity to reroute and improve the trail. There is a section in the forestry plan that specifies a buffer around the trails. However there is always a possibility that a drag road would need to cross the trail. SAMBA will attempt to address trail crossings by requesting that the crossing/s be identified to make sure the impact is minimal and are not at key sections of a trail. Honestly I think it would be better to focus on lessening any negative impacts that logging could have on the trail rather than fighting the logging as a whole. Let me know what you think.

Many specials thanks to all who attended the 2nd annual mountain bike Night Ride at The Park at Governor Dick in Mount Gretna. 
 
Attendance was 38 riders and we raised $206 for the Trail Support Committee at Governor Dick.  We cannot thank you enough for your continued support.  Despite slick trail conditions everyone had a fun safe time.
 
Hope to do it again next year and feel free to let me know if you prefer doing the ride in the summer or fall.

Please come out and join us for the 2nd annual mountain bike night ride sponsored by the Trail Support Committee at The Park At Governor Dick

 in Mount Gretna, PA.

 

 

Date:  October 5th (Friday); cancellation to be determined by 5PM on scheduled date of event if it rains and will be posted on MTBR PA forum or www.sambabiker.com

 

 

Time: 7:00 – 7:30 PM Registration starts on site (no preregistration); all riders will receive an event ticket

 

          7:00 PM Start your ride after you register

 

          11:00 PM All riders must be off premises

 

            Registration at educational center only*

 

Place:  Parking Lot at Governor Dick Educational Center only

            3283 Pinch Rd

            Cornwall, PA. 17016

 

           * Please do not park in any other parking area*

 

Fee: $5 per rider – funds go to Trail Support Committee for trail work

Requirements:

  • Helmet must be worn
  • Forward lighting – Helmet and bar mount preferred
  • No beginner riders please
  • Ride leader availability yet to be determined

Governor Dick Night Ride Report Print E-mail
Ideal weather and trail conditions for the Governor Dick Night Ride helped to make this event a huge success. A total of 34 mountain bikers attended and celebrated National Trails Day in the dark and supported the Governor Dick Trail Support Committee. Riders from Mount Gretna, Lititz, Lebanon, Lancaster, Cornwall, Maytown, Boiling Springs, Annville, Mount Joy, Mechanicsburg, Palmyra, Rexmont and Hummelstown came to show their support and enjoy the trails. Funds raised will go towards trail maintenance projects.

Special thanks to the Governor Dick board members for allowing this event to happen and group ride leaders Brad Doxtater and Brad Ditzler.

I wish to thank everyone who attended for making this a safe, fun and enjoyable evening.

Thank You - Governor Dick Trail Work Day 3/27/2011 Print E-mail
Once again, another great trail work day at The Park at Governor Dick in Mount Gretna, PA. A huge turn out of 29 volunteers from a multi-tude of trail user disciplines on a rather cold but sunny day. What we accomplished: trail 6 reroute completed in entirety and trail maintenance on trails 13 and 15.

Trail tools and snacks provided by SAMBA (www.sambabiker.com), Eric Stoffer (Tasty Cake Man) and the Governor Dick Trail Support Committee. Also, the new GD Trail map is now available. Check out the SAMBA and The Park at Governor Dick websites for a copy or you can stop by the environmental center.

*Reminder: DCNR is looking to form a Friends Group for Swatra State Park. The first meeting will be on Tuesday March 29, 2011 at 6:30 pm and will be held at the Twin Grove Resort and Campground. For more information check out the SAMBA website. Andrea Strubhar and Brian Arnold will be there to represent the club but would welcome your presence and support.
